OpenOffice Error Message Cant Save As PDF

With my old computer slowly dying on me, and actually taking half a minute or longer to open any program, it was time to buy a new computer. Three years and 3 months is long enough, especially since my machine is on most of the waking hours of my day (and night).
My son, who is a computer programmer and who now lives here in Sydney, has been urging me to look at what’s available through the online computer auction service at http://www.graysonline.com.au/category.asp?PARENT_ID=3
Actually he went further than that. He found me a beauty. We put in a maximum bid price and let the automatic bidding run. Result: I now have a shiny new Compaq with twice the memory and twice the hard drive capacity as before — and Vista as well — for just over AU$400 delivered to the door.
Talk about a deal.
The auction description said it was refurbished, but my son the computer whiz says it’s never been turned on. No dust in the box. All programs are running as brand new. As you can imagine, we ARE pleased.

So… I’ve spent the last few days installing the software I cant live without and transferring stuff from the old computer to the new one. I used SyncToy (it’s free) in the end and it worked nicely.

I’m using this equipment changeover as my prompt to also make the move from Microsoft Word and their related products to the free suite of comparable products from OpenOffice. That’s free, too.
You’ll get the idea that I like free. I also like open source, which is what the Open Office suite of products is too. You can download it from http://www.openoffice.org and that includes Impress, the equivalent of PowerPoint but also free. http://www.openoffice.org/product/impress.html

Okay, so there I was, an hour ago. I’d finished editing “Get To The Money Faster” and I wanted to convert it to PDF. But the rotten thing wouldnt work.
Was this a bug Í’d discovered in OpenOffice?
I checked the help files that come with OO, but nothing.
I searched online for something like: open office error message cant save as pdf.
But nothing there either.
Then it dawned on me. I was trying to save the PDF with the name GetToTheMoneyFaster.doc — notice the extension (.DOC). The moment I changed that to .pdf, all was sweetness and light.
Most things are easy — when you know how. But when you don’t, it’s been known to drive grown men plum crazy.

I’ve always wondered what the business model is for firms that write open source software. Can you comment on where your company’s income comes from? – I mean, you are giving away the code for free.

Open source is the way to go. I find it exceedingly weird that Microsoft Office doesn’t have a feature to turn files into PDFs, but who am I to twist their arms? Their software costs over $100 and Open Office does it for free.

Adobe acrobat is much more expensive… There are a lot of websites now that converts text into pdfs. They’ll just email it to you, pronto.
