According to Travis Sago, it all starts with an “event”. Such as when a new product is released.
Then people start writing and talking about it. And blogging about it. And making videos. And there are news releases.
By about that time, it has become a trend with ‘buzz’.
It’s a marketer’s dream… but ONLY if he knows about it.
So HOW do you find these hot niches?
One tool you can use is Google Trends. In a video I’ve just seen at YouTube, Travis shows how he uses Google.com/trends and he gives several examples.
EXAMPLE 1.
Type in terms such as ‘deer hunting, duck hunting, bow hunting’ and the trends software compares the volume of search activity for those 3 terms.
You’ll see that hunting is seasonal, so the line that represents search volume for these terms has ups and downs on a seasonal basis.
In a line at the bottom of the chart is the news volume for these keywords.
EXAMPLE 2.
Breast feeding has a much more consistent search volume. The line is not going up, but it plugs along at a consistently solid volume.
EXAMPLE 3.
Antique tractor is another example. He likes it better!
EXAMPLE 4.
Blogging. Now that’s hot these days. So he put in a bunch of related terms such as… wordpress, blog, blogging, blogger, video blog.
And just as you’d expect, there is a RISING trend line. Great, because a growing demand is the IDEAL marketing situation.
Now… the question is ‘what can you market to this growing niche crowd?’
